What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) was discovered by Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., in the late 1980s. Why EMDR Works (The Brain Science)

When we experience trauma or overwhelming stress, our nervous system can’t always process the memory fully. Instead, the memory gets “stuck” in the brain and body—frozen with all the original feelings, images, and beliefs.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or tones) to activate both hemispheres of the brain while recalling the memory. This helps the nervous system reprocess what happened—essentially moving it from a raw, “stuck” state into a resolved one.

In simple terms: EMDR helps the brain release old wounds and rewire new patterns of calm, safety, and strength.
